The Valley National Bank Branches

Other VNBs

This, the Weaver and Drover branch from 1955 at 1505 North 1st Street, quite near to the Burton Barr Library. Groundbreaking I suppose for its time, nice enough now, sensitively renovated for its current tenants, but unextraordinary.

One of the City of Phoenix "Mid-Century Marvels".

This is a Bank of America branch in Globe, presumed VNB. Other than a certain structural similarity to Ralph Wyatt's "Soviet Savings", I have no idea what this originally was, or who designed it, or when.

A nice mess, I wouldn't wish harm on it, but the massing and patterning and the color combination and the iron-lace fencing out front would be awkward enough, but in doesn't fit into context, and the lanscaping only adds to the sense of oddity. Kind of unforgettable, though.

Globe has another 1905 Greek Revival bank designed by the fellow who almost stabbed Frank Lloyd Wright to death, but that's another story.

This one stands on Camelback and 57th Avenue west of downtown. As a guess, I'd say this is a former Valley National Bank, likely around 1969. There are certain stylistic consistencies between this branch and the Boston City Hall, very popular and influential in its day, 1969.

If it's after 1967, it's not a Weaver and Drover. The Mushroom Bank was the last W&D branch. According to Frank Henry, Jack Stewart at the bank had been quite unhappy with its cost (although his boss had commissioned it) and had barred them afterward.

A good authority, if Frank Henry is a good authority, tells me that this is a Bennie Gonzalez-designed VNB.
