Western Savings Town & Country

20th Street and Camelback, Phoenix

Ralph Wyatt, architect

Also at 20th Street and Camelback, directly across the street from the former Washburn Piano, is the former Western Savings, year approximately 1960, architect Ralph Wyatt, and the two white sculptures out front are NOT by Phillips Sanderson, who did a lot of interior and exterior bank work. I've gone around and around on this issue with a network of people.

I think of it as Soviet Savings, not only because of the big white reliefs of heroic farmer and steelworker, but because the placement of the reliefs and the extensions on the sides of the building remind me of Melnikov or somebody like that. Memorable.
